Why Time Machine backup failed despite being connected to power source?
Time Machine did not back up because the computer was running on battery power. but was connected to power source

Change the Time Machine settings to allow "Back up on battery power".
System Settings > General > Time Machine > Options
As to why that happened: gremlins (?) 🤷🏽♂️
Restart the computer.
Make sure the power adapter is properly connected at both ends.
Make sure the power outlet is working.
