Gmail provides email headers, which include metadata such as the originating IP address (in some cases), the email server used, and timestamps. However:

  • If the sender used a common email provider (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook), the IP address shown may belong to the service provider and not the individual sender.
  • If the sender used a VPN or proxy, tracing the true origin becomes difficult.
  • Some email headers may not reveal the sender’s real location due to privacy policies or security measures.

If you're concerned about your safety due to a suspicious email (such as threats, harassment, or scams), you should:

  • Report phishing/scams directly in Gmail by clicking "Report phishing" or "Report spam."
  • Consult law enforcement if the email contains threats or sensitive information that puts you in danger.
