Why It Happens

When you save contacts without an international prefix (e.g., +1 for the U.S., +44 for the U.K.), your phone assumes those numbers are local to your current country. If you move to a different country and use a SIM card from that country, your phone may interpret those numbers as local to your new location.

Effects:

  1. Incoming Calls Show Only Numbers, Not Names: If your phone now expects numbers in the format of the new country, it may not recognize stored contacts because they lack the correct prefix.
  2. Dialing Issues: If you try to call a contact saved without a country code, your phone might attempt to dial it as if it were a local number, which could fail or connect to the wrong person.

Solution:

To avoid this issue, ensure that all contacts are stored with their full international format:

  • Correct format: + [Country Code] [Phone Number]
  • Example: Instead of saving 555-1234, save it as +1 555-1234 for a U.S. number.
