Use Time Machine to create a backup of your old Mac on and external USB drive. Then transfer your files to your new Mac using the Migration Assistant and that TM drive. If the drive has a USB-A type connector, then use either an inexpensive USB-A to USB-C plug adapter or USB-A/C cable to connect it to your new computer.

If you need to transfer data from a USB Type-A device (such as an external drive or flash drive) to a MacBook Pro that only has USB Type-C ports, here are your options:

1. Use a USB-C to USB-A Adapter

  • A simple USB-C to USB-A adapter lets you plug your USB-A device directly into your MacBook Pro.

  • Recommended adapters:

  • Apple USB-C to USB Adapter

    • Anker USB-C to USB 3.0 Adapter

2. Use a USB-C Hub with USB-A Ports

  • A USB-C hub expands your MacBook’s ports and often includes USB-A, HDMI, and SD card slots.

  • Recommended hubs:

  • Anker PowerExpand+

    • Satechi USB-C Multi-Port Adapter

3. Use a USB Drive with Both USB-A and USB-C

  • Some flash drives have dual connectors (USB-A on one side, USB-C on the other).

  • Recommended drives:

  • SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive USB-C

    • Samsung Duo Plus

4. Use a Cloud or Wireless Transfer Method

If you don’t have an adapter, you can transfer files wirelessly via:

  • AirDrop (for Mac-to-Mac or Mac-to-iPhone/iPad transfers).

  • iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox to upload and download files.

  • File Sharing (if both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network).
