I inadvertently have been using my backup HD as the boot drive. I want to transfer what I have over to the internal drive and I'm not sure how I can do that? Also, when I select the internal drive as my boot drive it tells me I need to update the OS, but errors out when I try and tells me it is unable to perform the update. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are not explaining the backup EHDs setup, how did you back up to it? For example did. you use Time Machine or use an app such as SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to back up to the External Hard Disk? Or did you simply copy and paste some files to the External Hard Disk?
It is critical that you explain this to us so we can provide the proper directions to get the information from the External Hard Disk to the iMac!!!!!
