When I try to stream virgin MediaOne from my computer to Apple in order to display it on the TV, the screen on both TV and computer goes black and I can hear sound from either the computer or the TV but not from both. I have turned off the computer and rebooted to no avail. I have turned screen mirroring on and off but this has not produced any results either.

Audio but no video is usually a strong indicator that the content provider is blocking screen mirroring. This happens quite often with commercial content in browsers, to prevent capturing.
For some content providers, It may be different for AirPlay streaming from the content provider app on iPhone or iPad.
Please see the content provider’s website (support pages) for details on AirPlay compatibility. If they don’t mention AirPlay at all, then they may not support it at all.
On the Apple TV box with tvOS 14 or later, one should be able to install the Virgin Media Play app, thus not needing AirPlay.
