Notes will not open or close on MacBook

My Notes will not open on my MacBook or close. I cant upgrade software because the notes app will not close and the computer will not update with it open. When I click on notes, nothing happens. A few months ago, all of my Notes just disappeared. Most could not be recovered. I was on the phone with Apple for hours. Once we were able to recover some, I had to then copy and paste to Notes on my phone vs. in the icloud just so they would not disappear. Now this! Apple, what is going on with Notes? I need to update and take Notes!!!
