Troubleshooting a Frozen Mac:

A. Get Back into Finder:

Apps may not be stalled. So, try getting out of them. Use my User Tip: [command + tab] Use it to Access your Mac when Something is Not Responding - User Tips

B. Use Force Quit:

See if this applications open. If that is the case, save what need be (if possible), and then Force Quit.

  1. Go To: Apple Menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: Mail
  4. Click: Force Quit button

and…

C. Remove Login Items --Use Safe Mode:

Boot in Safe Mode, and then remove all Login Items, seeing if this no longer occurs. In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in Safe Mode, remove these item, and then boot up normally, attempting another login.
