iPhone email app not working after iOS 18.3 update

After the iOS 18.3 update, the built in email app will not show as a read email until the email app is shut down and then entering back in again. The refreshing by pulling down no longer works. Also after the 18.3.1 update the problem still persists. I know that Outlook could be installed, but on iPhone for notifications I found the built in app has worked pretty good so far for me until now. Any ideas?

I also have 18.3 update and it has completely screwed up all my email accounts. From my list of all email accounts it will say it's updated on the bottom, but there is no new email when I go to open that account. Yet on my desktop or laptop I see 20 new emails. I tried deleting the email accounts then reinstalling them. This does not work at all. Today I discovered that my primary mail is getting routed to the other mailboxes like "promotional" or "transactions". This is unacceptable. In the past two days I have lost precious time sensitive emails to this update deciding what should have been primary emails were sent to promotional aka Junk mail.

So now what?

I've done everything you have (admittedly - in a helpful tone) advised to do. Fact is, my work e-mail was fine before this update, as was my personal Yahoo account. They still don't work properly. The Yahoo account doesn't receive most e-mails, the work account doesn't acknowledge that I've read e-mails on my computer or on the phone. The overarching question for me is this: Why do I need to fix this? Apple caused it. Some snot-nosed kid in his mom's basement (and who wrote the update) isn't worried about this - likely in the Republic of California. I'm one really ****** red-neck. **** I hate Apple with every cell of my being, hate Apple.

While I certainly appreciate the method(s) outlined to fix this issue, it appears that "lack of organization/preparedness on the part of Apple software engineers is causing an inconvenience on mine". My work e-mail account (on the phone) will not recognize when an e-mail is read on my phone or when I am in Outlook on my computer. As it pertains to my (I know, outdated) Yahoo e-mail address - it won't even fetch new-mails from my phone. My phone is an iPhone 16 Pro. Interestingly, I updated my iPad Pro as well to 18.3 and both accounts work fine. I have turned my phone off, waited 5 minutes, and turned on again-to no avail. I know that I will be advised to delete and re-add one or both of the accounts as noted here on the board, but why the inconsistency? I'm back to my opening - (and irrefutable) - statement... Ticks me off.

I have now updated my iphone and ipad to ios 18.3.1 but still my email doesn't work. I've removed all my email accounts except iCloud. I've sent a test email from my Mac to my iCloud account (just says "hello, how are you" -- no attachments) and it takes about 15-20 minutes before it appears on my iphone and ipad -- the little wheel just goes round and round till the email finally appears --I'm just so fed up with this. My iphone is a new one and it's now rubbish. Even iCloud mail is so slow, never mind my third party accounts (Yahoo, Microsoft).

Things I've tried: 1) removing accounts and adding them again, (2) restarting the iphone & ipad, (3) turning VPN off, (4) changing iphone mail to List View as BopCat suggested. None of these makes any difference.

Question: someone suggested that Categorising is going on in the background even when you've selected List View -- does this slow things down? Even so, the Categories/List View is only available on my iphone, not the ipad. The ipad doesn't have the Categories/List View option at all, and it's still really slow.

I’m having similar issues. After updating to iOS 18.3, my sent folder was not storing my sent emails. I did as Apple said, to delete my Gmail account on the phone then re downloaded it. It was a HUGE hassle! I had to jump through many hoops just to get it back on my phone. It was a Nightmare!! to say the least.

Since doing that all of my emails I previously had blocked, have flooded my email inbox, and now the Blocked feature isn’t working! Apple Continued, to try to blame the issues on the email servers. However, these issues only came about after they introduced the bugs into the system with iOS 18 and they won’t fix them.

I have no way to block these email addresses anymore! If you ask me that a security issue.

If you have not already done so, I would recommend:

  • Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked > clear every address ouf of the list until it's empty
  • Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > Mark Blocked Sender > OFF

If emails then still go to the Trash, you should login to your Google account using a browser and have a hard look at the "Filters and Blocked Addresses" setting (https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/filters). I would recommend deleting all blocked address from there as well. And, if you have an filters listed at the top, and you didn't create them, then delete those as well.

Then, do some testing on your iPhone again to ensure that your emails are coming and going without going to the trash. I would then recommend not using the blocked feature on your iPhone Mail because that featue is fairly inefffective at blocking modern spam or scam emails. Instead, always mark every single undesirable email as "Junk" in iOS Mail. That will train the server to recognize spam and deal with them for you. The key is to keep flagging messages as Junk.

If you are having this many issues with all of your mail accounts and on multiple devices, it's time to consider if your network is the cause of your mail slowness and not Mail at all. I would suggest the following troubleshooting steps to determine potential causes:

  • Properly uninstall all antivirus and security applications from all of your Apple devices (these are unnecessary and problematic)
  • Uninstall any "security" or "privacy" products that your ISP provides to you
  • If you are using 3rd party DNS servers on your devices or network, temporarily disable them
  • If you are using a VPN on your devices or network, disable or remove it
  • Reboot the devices
  • Do testing on your home network over Wi-Fi, and also on another trusted Wi-Fi network
  • Do testing while only connected to cellular data in a great coverage area
  • If you still can't get Mail on your iOS devices to work, try a network reset (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings)

What you are experiencing is of course not normal behavior. For example, throughout the day I use and iPhone 13, an M2 MacBook Air, and an M4 Mac Mini. All are fully updated to the latest Apple updates. I just tested emails to and from email accounts hosted on iCloud, Microsoft, Google, and all of the emails sent immediately and showed up in Mail within about 15 seconds on all of the other devices.

One additional suggesstion when testing send and receive. Use webmail to do the sending at first to ensure that you remove sending from the equation. Using webmail while you test also give you an immediate view of what is occuring on the server, unrelated to your local Mail issues.

Now They just came out with the 18.3.1 after the nightmare I’m having with my email. I’m scared to download it.

They update, doesn’t mention anything about fixing the email bugs from 18.3.

I was reading old posts, where some people’s email accounts got screwed up with the 18.0 back in August 2024. And Apple never did anything to fix it

Try the following:

  1. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > select "Leave in Inbox"
  2. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > select "Move to Trash"
  3. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > Mark Blocked Sender > OFF
  4. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > Mark Blocked Sender > ON
  5. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked > Add New ... > manually add an email address to block
  6. Restart the iPhone
  7. Open the Mail app and see if using the "Block Sender" feature works normally

I am just guessing with the above suggestions but can tell you that I have seen cases before where iPhone settings simply needed to be toggled to a different setting and then back to begin working again. In addition, maybe manually adding one address to the blocked list will kickstart that list as well.

Thank you FishingAddict for all your suggestions. I have done everything you suggested but this hasn't made any difference. I don't suspect a problem with my wifi anyway as it's pretty fast using my Mac.

I also did your 'blocked sender' suggestions, changing the settings and adding an additional blocked sender. This hasn't helped either.

Then I did the following:

  • on my iPad I opened Safari and logged into my Outlook account
  • on my Mac I opened the Mail app and sent a test email from my iCloud account to my Outlook account
  • the email arrived in the Inbox on the Mac (Mail app) AND in the Outlook account on my iPad (in Safari) within seconds, so it arrived on the Outlook server very quickly
  • the email didn't arrive in the iPad Mail app until several minutes later.

I can live with a few minutes delay if there's only 1 new email. But if there are several new emails then the little wheel can go round for 15 minutes before they load. So infuriating.

Exactly the same problem with the iPhone, and it's only since updating to iOS 18.
