Apple Mail app not updating from unread to read emails on iPhone

After the iOS 18.3 update, the built in email app will not show as a read email until the email app is shut down and then entering back in again. The refreshing by pulling down no longer works. Also after the 18.3.1 update the problem still persists. I know that Outlook could be installed, but on iPhone for notifications I found the built in app has worked pretty good so far for me until now. Any ideas?

I also have 18.3 update and it has completely screwed up all my email accounts. From my list of all email accounts it will say it's updated on the bottom, but there is no new email when I go to open that account. Yet on my desktop or laptop I see 20 new emails. I tried deleting the email accounts then reinstalling them. This does not work at all. Today I discovered that my primary mail is getting routed to the other mailboxes like "promotional" or "transactions". This is unacceptable. In the past two days I have lost precious time sensitive emails to this update deciding what should have been primary emails were sent to promotional aka Junk mail.

So now what?

Try the following:

  1. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > select "Leave in Inbox"
  2. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > select "Move to Trash"
  3. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > Mark Blocked Sender > OFF
  4. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked Sender Options > Mark Blocked Sender > ON
  5. Settings > Apps > Mail > Blocked > Add New ... > manually add an email address to block
  6. Restart the iPhone
  7. Open the Mail app and see if using the "Block Sender" feature works normally

I am just guessing with the above suggestions but can tell you that I have seen cases before where iPhone settings simply needed to be toggled to a different setting and then back to begin working again. In addition, maybe manually adding one address to the blocked list will kickstart that list as well.

Nearly all Mail send/receive issues can be solved by:

  1. Back up iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Update iOS on iPhone - Apple Support
  3. If the email account is iCloud: If iCloud Mail isn't working - Apple Support
  4. If the email account is any other account provider (e.g. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc.) then continue below:
  5. Remove the email account: Add and remove email accounts on iPhone - Apple Support
  6. Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
  7. Add the email account back: Add and remove email accounts on iPhone - Apple Support

Depending on how long ago and exactly how your Yahoo account was added to the devices can make a big difference on how smoothly those accounts work. For example, in the account on the iPhone could be using an old protocol like POP3 instead of IMAP. The methods used for authentication can also change over time and the server addresses that a provider wants you to use can also change over time. And lastly, it is always possible that the database that actually stores the email content has some corruption.

For all of these various reasons, deleting an account from a device, rebooting the device, and then adding the account back is the tried and true method (regardless of the device or OS) that ensures that an account has a freshly created mailbox database, is using the currently recommended server settings, and is using the most modern authentication (and 2FA). You may want to also consider doing the same procedure on any device that is misbehaving so that all of them are similarly using modern settings.

Update: I just realized my prior response was wrong. The version of Yahoo I'm using has no categories, so when I switched from "Categories" to "List View" on my phone (3 dot menu at top), everything showed up under Primary and it appeared to be fixed. But when doing that in Gmail, every ad, promo, etc. you've designated to go to other inboxes shows in Primary, so NOT a fix. It appears Apple has once again geared changes to be compatible only with their products, i.e. Apple Mail. Even shared category names like Updates, Promotions, etc. sort completely differently. So Gmail (the top email provider worldwide), Outlook, Yahoo, etc. users have no option but to change categories manually, which still won't help future/new contacts from being routed who knows where. And apparently there's no way to downgrade from 18.3.1, so I can only hope they change it back with the next update (but I doubt it).
