I am having trouble exporting the edited pictures from the photos app on my MacBook. it shows unknown error. I even tried to boot in safe mode, yet still the same problem. it seems the edited picture is not being downloaded in the app, I could really use some help.

First-- the clock on the Mac in the picture indicates 5 PM, but the post was sent at 5 AM my time. Where are you? India, maybe?

Now, more seriously: Can you give us more information?

  • Do all pictures fail to export, or just certain ones?
  • Where are you exporting to-- a Finder folder, or what?
  • Do you use iCloud Photos?

If so, do you have "Optimize Storage" turned on for Photos?

  • Where does your Photos Library reside-- in the Pictures folder of your internal drive, or on an external drive? or on a network? on iCloud drive?
  • Has this problem always existed, or did it just start? Can you think of anything that changed that might affect your device?

Have you tried these things?

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Those are the easiest things to try first. Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

That looks good-- you've covered most of the things I first think of. I had missed that you'd already tried Safe Mode.

An external drive sits outside the Mac's case, and it would be connected by a cable. The reason that I asked about that is that sometimes people keep their Photos Library on an external drive that is improperly formatted, and it messes things up.

Is your Photos Library in the Pictures folder? I'm asking because sometimes people move it to iCloud Drive, for instance, where it cannot work. That cloud symbol seems to indicate that a connection to iCloud is not working, but if your don't have "Optimize" turned on, and the Library is properly in the Pictures folder, I'm not sure why that's there.

When you look at System Settings>AppleID>iCloud, do you have more than 10% free storage in iCloud?

When you look at System Settings>General>Storage, do you have more than 10% free storage on your Mac?

The screenshot looks like the picture is in Edit Mode-- is that right? Can you edit the picture, change brightness, etc?

It looks like Photos may have lost the connection to the original image files. In Photos's Settings>General

is "Use as System Photos Library" grayed out, as it should be? Is "Copy Items" checked, as it should be?

I'm sure we're narrowing it down-- let us know what you find…

That's weird-- in order to edit a picture, the original has to be available, so it must be OK, I think. Your Settings look good.

You are using iCloud-- how does the picture work at iCloud.com? Can you download the picture from there? Do the edits you make on your Mac transfer to iCloud?

You do need to try these things:

  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-double-clicking the app icon.
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it. For this, you'll need to move the Library to a neutral folder so the new user can access it. I usually move one from Users/rtaylor/pictures to Users. Don't forget to move it back to your Pictures folder when you've checked it out.

Yes, I am in India and I am a newly MacBook user. Replying to your questions one by one:

1) not all pictures, just a few certain one fail to export, the ones which I edited in the MacBook's photos app itself

2) I tried to airdrop it onto my iPhone, when that didn't happen, I tried exporting it to a finder folder

3)Yes, iCloud Photos in on, and no, I didn't have optimise storage turned on

4)my photos library reside on mackintosh hard drive, I am not sure if it is external or internal

5) this is the first time I tried exporting pictures so yeah, this is the first time I encountered this problem

6)I obviously did try to restart the computer

7)I did restart in safe mode as well, but the problem did not go away

here is a screenshot of the picture I am trying to export and this is what it shows:
