What is nsurisessiond and why is it consuming internet bandwidth?

nurisessiond has been running on my DJL (I know. Archaic and uncool.) for over an hour now. Is this some kind of malware?

I believe that nsurlsessiond ("url" with a small L, not "uri" with a small I) is a daemon (system process) that handles network transfers and synchronization.

The naming probably breaks down something like this:

  • "ns" stands for NeXTstep. macOS is based in part on NeXTstep and many of its components follow NeXTstep naming conventions.
  • "url" stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
  • "d" stands for "daemon" or "background process". Giving a daemon a name with a trailing "d" is the customary practice for BSD Unix and operating systems based on it (which NeXTstep and macOS are, in part).
  • "session" (in the context of "URL" and "daemon") suggests ongoing interaction with network resources which are identified by URLs. E.g., downloading and uploading.

Nsurlsessiond is consuming high bandwidth… - Apple Community

"Many system services and 3rd party apps will use nsurlsessiond to do downloading/uploading something in the background, such as iCloud Drive, Photos, 3rd apps that use iCloud to backup/sync app data, etc, etc, etc. So it's not a single task or app that eats up your bandwidth but all these services combined."
