I found just a lost AirPods Case with no earbuds and when I do the Identify Lost Item in the Find My app, it detects the AirPods but asks me to hold the buds to identify owner, which I do not have. Is there no way to find the owner with just the case? I am trying to return it to the owner.

No. You are not going to be able to find out who this person is, yourself (unless you know who it is). Be honest about this, and hand it in to local authorities, or to the nearest facility where you found it. Another option would be to post something on Craigslist.

If the owner left a message, I may have been able to return it to them. But my question in
the first place was to see if I could identify found item with just the case to do that in Find My. I will try to drop it off at lost and found as I am trying to return it to the owner, I was never going to pocket it for myself. Thanks for your reply anyway.
