Siri Limited While Using CarPlay – Help Needed

Hi everyone,

Recently, out of the blue, I’ve experienced limited functionality with Siri while driving. I can still make phone calls, but I can no longer switch songs on Spotify, navigate, or perform other voice commands without getting the following error message:

"Sorry. I can’t show you the results while you’re in the car."

I’ve tried several troubleshooting steps, but nothing seems to work, including:

  • Changing the device type of my car’s Bluetooth connection
  • Checking and disabling Driving Focus (I also tried creating one and setting it to manual)
  • Ensuring there are no safety restrictions
  • Verifying that Siri’s settings are properly configured (these commands work fine when I’m not in the car)

I’m using a Sony XAV-AX3200 head unit in a 2013 Mazda6. The steering wheel’s voice command button isn’t compatible with the head unit, so I rely on "Hey Siri" for hands-free control. However, Siri only completes these commands when I manually press the voice button on the head unit. If I use "Hey Siri," I always get the error message mentioned above.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I feel like I’ve tried everything! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Yesterday when I got in the car, I manually went into Spotify on Apple Car Play and there was a button to use Siri. Pressed that and for the rest of the day (even after turning car on and off) I could request songs again using my voice and I was even able to ask Siri a question and she answered it. I haven't tried using maps using voice command again yet. When I get in my car again today I will see if the issue seems to have been fixed (not sure why it broke in the first place though!). Fingers crossed no more issues

Why have a 'Hands Free' feature if one can't use it 'Hands Free' and need to use it 'Hands On' ?

Have to disconnect the phone and say "Go Home" or to someone's house in contacts, then reconnect the phone to CarPlay and have it show up on the screen.

To navigate to a business destination, open the Maps on the CarPlay screen, move the curser and go to Search, hit the Siri icon, it will say "Where do you want to go?", tell it, then it will navigate as before. Siri this way doesn't recognize my contacts tho - I can't tell it to simply have it connected and use 'Go Home' like before - even tho I'm parked in my garage.

Otherwise, I get 'Sorry, I can't show you the results while driving'

I'm getting this using Apple Music. I don't even have any other music apps on my phone, streaming or otherwise. I have even tried summoning the voice assistant with the button my steering wheel and "Hey Siri," with verbiage of, "Play <song title> by <Artist> on Apple Music" I am speaking slowly and enunciating every word with a halfsecond gap between each word. Still Siri says "I can't show you results while you are driving."

This is frustrating. First world problem to be sure, but I really wish I could just downgrade to 17 until they fix this. I'm currently on iOS 18.3.1 on a 16 Pro. Given this, I am reasonably certain that it is NOT an issue with a non Apple app. One counterexample disproves a rule. Siri is confused and blaming the user for not knowing how to use a phone is not helpful.

Same issue for me too. The only way for me to have Siri to play certain playlist or music, I have to manually go into Apple Music app on CarPlay, and push "Ask Siri to Play" - which is not the method I want to use when I'm driving. (Besides, I can go to Playlist from there and manually press the one I want if I'm already pressing through the app) Not only music or navigation, but even a simple question like "How's the weather tomorrow" gives me the same "Can't show you the results while you're driving" or sometimes asks me if I want to use ChatGPT for the result. VERY distracting and unsafe while driving...

I'm driving a 2021 Honda Civic that has a button specifically to summon Siri or whatever the Android equivalent is. I have done every troubleshooting step I can think of, and searching for more landed me here. While I do not like to see the frustration this is causing, at least I know I'm not the only one. This is good because I was beginning to think I lost my wits.
