M1 Macbook Pro 13 internal or exteral keyboard not functioning

Internal keyboard not responsive (no backlight or Caps lock light). Trackpad not responsive. (neither in normal mode - safe mode or recovery mode) I plugged in a USB A Apple Keyboard and mouse (with A - C adapteur) External keyboard not responding. Still can't type in password to login. In recovery mode external mouse functions.

It appears that with Macos Sonoma security is setup to disable usb devices (keyboard and mouse) before login. So as the internal keyboard and trackpad are broken there is no way of using an external one without doing a clean setup and then changing the security setting.

Solution

I'm going to replace the internal kayboard and trackpad so the user can access their data.

External USB keyboard is available for Startup Options screen & Recovery—

not for the macOS until you log in and approve the keyboard...

you can trouble shoot further

—A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.
