I am switching from an individual plan to a family plan. I have stopped my old payment for my individual plan and I’m getting notice saying my Apple Music will stop. However, I’m wondering can I keep my songs or will it just stop and I have to start over?

See Get an Apple Music family subscription - Apple Support. Normally you would simply select the new plan and it would replace the one you already have, no need to cancel the old one first. Start a new plan before the old one expires or you may lose your existing cloud library. If your plan expires you lose access to all content from the Apple Music subscription service, and any of your own matched or uploaded content that currently exists only in the cloud.
I don't official advice to point to, but I think Apple may keep your cloud library for at most 30 days after your subscription lapses in which you might be able to renew and recover it, otherwise you're starting from scratch.
