Find my Device Erased New IPad Image

Today, I completed a seamless transfer from an old iPad Air 4 to a new iPad Air M2. I erased the data from the old iPad Air. Following the trade in instructions, I removed the old iPad from find my device on icloud. As soon as I did this, it literally rebooted and erased the new image on the new iPad Air M2. I have never had this happen before as I’ve done this with new cell phones. I spent 2 hours on Apple chat with no resolution. This is very distressing as there has to be a way for apple to restore the find my device from their server. Any advice?

Did you take the precaution of having an iCloud or iTunes backup of your old iPad before you erased it? If yes, you can restore the backup to your new iPad:

If you don't have a backup - and both the old and new iPad's have been erased - your data will be unrecoverable.

If you value your data, always maintain a backup - this being good practice for any computer system, including Apple devices. Your backup is the safety net that, should an unanticipated disaster occur, you can recover most (if not all) of your important data and files.

Any of your data that was already synchronised with iCloud will be safely preserved. As soon as you log-in to iCloud with your AppleID, all synchronised data will be available to your new iPad. You can also access your files and data using a web-browser from any computer (unless you had previously enabled Advanced Data Protection for your Apple Account):
