at least 90% of the time I receive a message that I need to type my passcode in order to use Face ID?
If I’m not mistaken the reason for Face ID is so you do not constantly type your passcode

That is normal if the phone has been sitting without being unlocked for a long period of time or if faceid has failed to authenticate several times in a row.
There are times which your iPhone will require you to enter your Passcode instead of Face ID. All the reasons for this I have provided below which are written by SravanKrA, another knowledgeable community member here, which I believe will be helpful to you.
That leads me to some information I already know and information I have already researched.
Maybe this is normal?, but none of those reasons given are applicable and are not consistent with other phones.
To be honest this is not the #1 concern so I’ll just leave it

Hmm…. I’m glad to have more information, but my other iPhone does not request the information routinely.
I change/ update passwords & passcodes at the same time on both phones
