How do I change 'Gulf of America' back to 'Gulf of Mexico' on Apple Maps?

Hi Apple.

I don't want to see the "Gulf of America" on my Apple Maps as it's not factually or historically accurate. I found that Mapquest has been waiting in the wings to join the resistance and so far hasn't caved to ridiculous alteration of historical facts. How can that be changed back or made an the very least a user decision. Apple is a global company. I reside in the states and travel all over... what happens when I am in Denmark? Is the Gulf of Mexico now the Gulf of Mexico because the governing country I am in isn't under an orange man-baby's rule? It's facts again? When I'm in Mexico it's Mexico? What happens if next week, New York isn't New York anymore? Do we all have to get new drivers licenses and Apple just changes New York to who knows what? This is a pretty big rabbit hole you're headed down. I won't be using Apple Maps and will be on the hunt for another platform completely which is really unfortunate.

As for shopping elsewhere, not sure what you are suggesting. Since all Androids phones had already made the change, that leaves you with a landline phone or possibly a Chinese made device. The latter uses their own nation's mapping data with its own issues. For example, it doesn't even show Taiwan as its own Country and simply includes it as part of China, even if the region of your device is set to the US that recognizes Taiwan.

It is actually pretty simple. The data used comes from the region your device is set for. In the US, the datasource is the USGS that has made that change. It has already been reported that users in other regions see it as the Gulf of Mexico on their maps as the datasource would come from that region.

For any political issue, the best course of action would be to contact your Congressional Representatives. They do have the power to change the database for the USGS and you have the power as an eligible voter to choose whoever you want to represent you.

The Gulf of Mexico was renamed the Gulf of America by a Presidential executive order. Apple had nothing to do with it and any U.S. government agency that generates maps (e.g. USGS) is required to make the name change. As Apple and Google are consumers of this map source data, they are blameless.

I couldn't care less about the name change. People who are mentally bogged down with 15th-century Spanish history, or find themselves in the wrong political party, probably will continue to add to the hundreds of posts (that no one can fix, and Apple does not read) in these communities. Few realize that the U.S. has 1600+ miles of coastline on that body of water, and Mexico has a mere fraction of that distance.

No sitting president is going to impose a name change on a U.S. state, so don't get carried away with your exaggerations.

For those who need to brush up on Presidential Executive Orders and how the Legislative and Judicial branches of government might repeal them, read on… I do not see members of Congress or the Supreme Court tripping over themselves to revoke this E.O.
