Why does an orange microphone sign appear at the top of my iPhone?

The orange dot indicator means an app is using your microphone. If you swipe down from the top-right hand corner of the Control Center, you can see in the top what app that is.

It indicates that the microphone is being used.

Remember, you will always see the microphone indicator when you are on a call.
