How do I finance an unlocked iPhone without selecting a carrier?

After adding my phone for trade in and picking that I want to finance through payments, I HAVE to pick a carrier. Like not "Oh I want to sign up for this carrier". No, I apparently have to have an account with said carrier. I'm on cricket so none of these apply. The closest I can get is if I sign up for boost, but then the phone is locked to boost for two months.

Am I the only one who finds this absolutely ridiculous? Is there some way around this? If the phone is going to be unlocked anyway why should I need to pick a carrier?

I believe the OP is talking about financing through Apple.

If you play with the ordering page for a new iPhone, on the U.S. site, the words "And your new iPhone will be unlocked" disappear when you select any of the carrier financing plans.

They remain if you select Apple Card Monthly installments or Apple iPhone Payments as your financing method. (Apple Card Monthly installments obviously require you to have an Apple-branded credit card). But with these methods, "Carrier selection of AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon is required."

If you buy a phone outright, paying full price up front, then you see both the words "And your new iPhone will be unlocked" and an option to "Connect to any carrier later."

Financing is provided by the carrier. Not Apple. That is why the monthly payment for a financed iPhone is part of your monthly bill from your carrier. When purchasing an iPhone through Apple, only the carriers that have partnered with Apple to provide financing can be selected.

You may be able to finance a new iPhone through Cricket if you contact them directly.

I'd believe that, except when you have select "Financing", you literally have the option to pick either carrier deals, or "Only from Apple".

If you pick a carrier deal, then you can choose from their own finance options. If you chose "Only from apple" then you can pick between monthly payments or AppleCard. These are both offered from the same bank so you're financing from apple. And then you STILL have to pick a carrier, even though the phone is unlocked (Unless you pick ATT or Boost)

From what I've heard, the process is the same from previous years, except now Apple REQUIRES you to have a post paid account (Prepay doesn't work) to buy an UNLOCKED phone.

And yes, I could finance from cricket using a third party method. But they don't have a trade in program.

It is not. Those talk about finance options, but no matter what, you have to have an account with one of the carriers to proceed. The only exception is boost, but that locks you to them for 2 months. I have Cricket.

So as it stands, if you don't have any of the major carriers, you can't buy an unlocked phone from apple.

That.....really makes no sense.
