How to safely dispose of Ipad 2 that won't charge anymore?

My old I pad 2 no longer will charge. I have tried multiple apple cords but it is not charging. I want to delete the data so I can dispose of it. But if it won't charge ( battery is in red zone)how can I delete the data? Is just physically smashing it up an option?

Smashing it, won't in and of itself delete the data. Also, unless someone has your passcode, the data is already inaccessible as it's encrypted and cannot be decrypted without the passcode.

Best bet, is to just have Apple Recycle it.

As I said, the data is encrypted, without the passcode it cannot be accessed. It does not matter if it's not directly erased.

Apple can erase the storage chips if they deem it necessary, but without the passcode its virtually impossible to access any data on it anyway.

You can always remove it from your account https://icloud.com/find to ensure the data is even more irretrievable.
