It keeps popping up when I’m on Words With Friends, even though I never gave permission for banner ads. That’s the only app where it keeps popping up frequently—multiple times an play—and seemingly randomly. Is the only solution to quit playing WWF?

The only way I found to block it is via screen time. I chose the “adult sites” option.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Screen Time
  3. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions
  4. Enter your Screen Time passcode
  5. Select Content Restrictions
  6. Select Web Content
  7. Select Limit Adult Websites or Allowed Websites
  8. Under Never Allow, tap Add Website
  9. Enter the URL of the website you want to block
  10. Confirm by going back

As I stated in my post, it pops up automatically in Safari without me tapping anything in the Cryptograms app. This game is by Joyteractive Limited and not Zynga. It also popped up in the app My Perfect Hotel which is done by SayGames Ltd. I don't know that it's just Zynga.

It is not just Zynga, it is any app that uses the Ad Network where the ad is run. There are only about 7 or 8 ad companies that are commonly used by developers to provide ads and the same ads will often be purchased from multiple ad companies. Zynga has been the common one seen here because of how many people play Words with Friends. They are also the one that has made a statement that it is related to the ad that is displayed and working to get that ad removed by their provider. The same ad is seen on the Paint by Numbers app. Contacting the game developer is the best course of action.

These are simply ads provided by the app/game you are playing. Tapping the ad is going to open the page in Safari. That is how they work, it is not Malware and you can navigate away from the page if you wish. You have several options:

  • Quit playing the game
  • Complain to the developer of the game
  • Pay for the ad free experience if offered
  • Write a review in the App Store for the app to let other potential users know of your experience

Word with Friends if the one that displays it frequently, but it can come from any game that uses the same ad network. In reality there are only about 4 or 5 Ad companies that developers use and they are common across many apps. The developer of the game is paid for the ads and Apple receives zero money from them. It is your choice if you want to continue and support the developer by using the app.

Hi everyone, I’m reading where people are only experiencing this with Words with Friends. It is popping up with everything that I have on the screen of this iPad, not just Words with Friends, but all apps and when I’m on a website on Safari too. It’s probably been several months since I downloaded anything out of the App Store on this iPad, but I made the mistake I guess a couple days ago of downloading Solitaire Clash. I never even opened this app, but these ads began within 15 minutes of downloading it. It took me until the next morning to think the two may have been connected though and I immediately deleted it without ever opening it. But now I’m dealing with this every 10-15 minutes, no matter what I’m doing on this iPad. Again, I don’t know if there is any correlation between the two, but thought I had to mention my experience.

I’m having the exact same problem while playing with words with friends. It is so irritating!! Has someone figured out how to resolve this issue? I’m new to this community forum and I don’t see a place where it has answers.

Have you seen the link provided from the Developer of Words with Friends (Zynga) that they are aware of the issue with their ad network and working to resolve the problem? There was also a user who contacted Zynga and they gave them ad free service for 24 hours.

The only solution is to quit using the app until it has been fixed by Zynga or their ad service provider. You can complain to them as well and they may also give you ad free game time. There have been suggestions to add that site on your Screen Time restrictions, but you are still redirected to Safari.

The issue seems to be related to the service some games use to serve up ads.

You can go into your browser and block the trafficshield.xyz url, but this is only a partial solution.

If you play the game, in my case it is "Tangle Color" with ads, at some point the ad server will attempt to open your browser to that url.

I solved the problem for my iPad, I deleted the app and sent them a 1 star rating. I can find another app like the offending one.

Good luck
