Apple TV 2nd gen cannot login with 2-factor authorization

I am trying to get 2nd gen Apple TV to work again. But 2nd gen Apple TV running tvos 6.9.2 does not seem to work with 2-factor sign in. After (laboriously) entering apple id and password, i get popup on iphone showing me 6 digit to enter into Apple TV. But the apple tv simply rejects the login credentials without asking for the 6 digit code.

how do I get around this? Do I need to disable TFA? Or is this possible?

all of my other Apple devices are up to date with latest software.

You can't turn off two-factor authentication. This is a problem for this generation of Apple TV units because they were built between 2010 and 2012, while Apple adopted 2FA about 2015. Therefore the code has to be retro fitted to function by entering it as part of your password.

When you have the code enter the six digits immediately after your password and it should work.

I have to add though that as this hardware is obsolete the time has come to replace it with a new one.

I saw a very useful tip here by Urquhart1244, a senior member of this forum, which advised to type the password then request a new verification code. This takes the pressure off getting all the characters in place before the code expires.

Thanks. The information helped but I still cannot get in. It got me further than the original error which just kicked me out. This time it seemed to accept the password but gave me an error about photostream is not available then still didn't let me sign in.

I know this is obsolete, but I just wanted it for a TV in the back room for doing simple things. But I guess this won't work now anyway.

Thanks for your help.
