Can Apple store require iCloud backup for iPhone battery replacement?

My daughter made an appointment at the regional Apple Store to have her iPhone’s degraded battery replaced. Before visiting the store, she backed up her iPhone data to her laptop - a multiple hours-long process. At her appointment, the Apple Store representative informed her that the store would not replace her phone’s battery unless she backed up her phone to the iCloud, and they would need to see evidence on her phone that she had done so. And further, if her data exceeded the free amount of iCloud storage then she would have to sign up for a plan to purchase iCloud storage. She left the store without her degraded battery being replaced.

This is misinformation. Apple Service Centers and Apple Authorized Service Providers do not require proof of data backup before servicing an iPhone. They also don’t mandate using iCloud over PC or Mac for backups — the choice is entirely yours. It’s unreasonable to suggest they would push you to purchase iCloud+ storage.

This claim doesn’t align with my experience.

However, they do require you to digitally sign a document stating that Apple cannot be held accountable for any data loss during the service process and that you have safely backed up all your data for restoration.

This sounds like some kind of confusion and misunderstanding between the Apple Genius and your daughter. I suggest talking to a Genius again and receiving more detailed information.

Generally the only time a backup is highly recommended is when they are swapping the device out for another device. Replacing a battery rarely results in loss of data, but the repair form your daughter would have had to sign contains language that Apple is not responsible for any loss of data. This is where the confusion probably occurred.

The Genius was probably going over the liability statement before signing and they misunderstood each other. I’ve seen it before. I’m a former Apple Store manager.

Thanks for replying. Confusion regarding the release might be an explanation, but the request for proof and the advisory regarding additional iCloud storage costs point the other way.

Perhaps the manager of the Altamonte Mall Apple store is a regular user of this forum and can speak to the “genius,” who assisted Mia yesterday at 3 PM with the battery replacement, and verify the employee’s understanding of Apple policies and his/her recollection of the interaction.

You’re welcome. This isn’t hard. The second paragraph covers what you need.

Legal - Retail Store Service - Apple

This is the US Apple Retail Store terms and conditions and all your daughter needs is the second paragraph.

If your daughter has any issues just ask her to request a manager and she can explain the situation. If you want to reference this thread, here’s the link.
