If you have an Apple Retail Store that’s convenient it can be done over the counter, no additional charges. In some countries and regions Apple Authorized Service Providers can do over the counter replacements as well. In the US I had a replacement done at Best Buy.

AppleCare has a deductible, and Apple also expects to receive the failed device back and will bill if not returned.

With most cases I’ve dealt with, the exchange can either happen at the same time, or Apple can hold the failed device and order a replacement device for later delivery.

Check with Apple directly for details specific to your situation, though.

Apple Offers Express Replacement Service in some countries and regions. Express Replacement requires payment in full via credit card. If the return of the covered device is returned within the terms and conditions a credit will be issued after the device is inspected and the defect is observed and verified. If no defect is observed, the iPhone is returned and you have two iPhones.
