Canon printer can AirPrint with my MBA but can’t connect to my iPad Air 3 or iPhone 13—both have up to date OS

Greetings and thanks in advance. I have an iPad Air v 3 with IPAD OS 18.3.1 (current). And iPhone 13 (OS up to date); and a MacBook Air (2020 M1). I have 2 printers, both connected to my Wifi network.

BUT while I can print to my older printer (Canon MX340, not AirPrint enabled) from my MBA, (M1, 2020) I cannot connect and print from my iPad Air nor from my iPhone 13.

BUT I can print from all three devices wirelessly to my 2 yr old Brother MFC L2750; why am I unable to print to the Canon when both printers are connected to my Wifi?

I have tried to find out what to do by searching on Apple Support, w/o success.

**I am aware that my other (newer) printer, a Brother MFC IS AirPrint ready but that the Canon MX340 is NOT (was out several yrs before AirPrint was introduced).

TIA for any help you can share… I have used Apple products for almost 20 yrs, but do have difficulty understanding deep details… so if you are answering, please keep it simple , if possible.

In order to print from an iPhone or iPad to a non-AirPrint printer (such as the MX340), a special iOS/iPadOS app (typically, from the printer manufacturer) must be available.

Canon has a Canon PRINT app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/canon-print/id664425773). The MX series appears to be supported as such, but whether this applies to the MX340 is another question. You could perhaps carry out a test.

As you have indicated, the Brother MFC-L2750DW is an AirPrint-enabled printer model.

About AirPrint - Apple Support

This means that the MacBook Air does not need additional drivers for the Brother printer. The iPhone and the iPad do not need special apps either in this case.

Since you can print wirelessly from the MacBook Air, appropriate printer drivers would be installed for the (non-AirPrint) Canon MX340, though.

Please note that AirPrint is not the same as wireless printing in general. Apple's AirPrint technology can in fact be used for both wireless (Wi-Fi) and wired (Ethernet) network connections, and even with USB.
