Does anyone have a step by step guide to splitting an apple ID my wife and I have shared our many years!

I have seen responses that shows bits of the process, but nothing that explains it all in one go.

I am keeping the original ID and my wife is creating the new one. We have a spare phone, so i'm thinking of keeping the old one until, she is satisfied that she has everything.

Things we share - some passwords, purchases and she uses iCloud for the photo back ups, which I want to use but currently don't.

This is what Chat GPT says - is this correct?

Step 1: Determine Who Keeps the Original Apple ID

  • Decide whether you or your wife will retain the existing Apple ID.
  • The other person will create a new Apple ID.

Step 2: Prepare Devices Before Signing Out

Do these steps on both devices (yours and your wife’s) before signing out of the shared Apple ID:

  1. Ensure All Devices Are Up to Date:
    • Go to Settings > General > Software Update to install the latest iOS version.
  1. Enable iCloud Backup (Temporary Measure for Safety):
    • Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now
    • This ensures you have a backup before making changes.
  1. Check iCloud Sync for Contacts, Photos, Notes, etc.
    • Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud
    • Toggle ON Contacts, Photos, Notes, Keychain (for passwords), and any other important data.
    • This ensures your data syncs properly before separating accounts.
  1. Enable Photos Syncing with iCloud Photos (If Used)
    • Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos
    • Turn ON iCloud Photos (if not already on).
    • This ensures all photos are stored in iCloud before signing out.
  1. Check Keychain is Enabled for Passwords
    • Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Keychain
    • This ensures saved passwords are backed up and synced.

Step 3: Create a New Apple ID for One Person

  • The person getting a new Apple ID should go to Apple ID website and create an account.
  • OR on an iPhone/iPad:
    • Settings > Sign in to your iPhone > Don't have an Apple ID? Create One
    • Follow the steps to create a new Apple ID.

Step 4: Sign Out of the Shared Apple ID on One Device

For the person moving to the new Apple ID:

  1. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out
    • Enter the shared Apple ID password if prompted.
  1. Choose “Keep a Copy” When Signing Out
    • Select Contacts, Keychain, Safari, Reminders, Messages, Health Data, and any other essential data.
    • Tap Sign Out and wait for the process to complete.
  1. Sign in with the New Apple ID
    • Go to Settings > Sign in to iPhone and enter the new Apple ID.
    • Enable iCloud Sync for Photos, Contacts, Keychain, and other important data.

Step 5: Handle Purchased Apps, Music & Subscriptions

  • Apps, music, and purchases made with the original Apple ID stay linked to that Apple ID.
  • The person with the new Apple ID can:
    • Set up Family Sharing to retain access to purchased apps & media.
    • Manually re-download free apps from the App Store.
    • Re-subscribe to services under the new Apple ID if necessary.

Setting Up Family Sharing:

  • On the device that keeps the original Apple ID:
    • Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing > Set Up Family Sharing
    • Add the new Apple ID so both users can share purchases.

Step 6: Separate Messages, FaceTime, and Email

  • On each device, go to:
    • Settings > Messages > Send & Receive
    • Settings > FaceTime
    • Settings > Mail > Accounts
    • Remove the shared Apple ID and ensure your new Apple ID (or personal email) is used.

Step 7: Verify Everything is Working

  • Ensure Photos, Contacts, iCloud Drive, and Keychain passwords are accessible.
  • Check that purchases & subscriptions are correctly linked via Family Sharing.
  • Confirm that messages, FaceTime calls, and emails are now tied to personal accounts.

Final Step: Delete Any Leftover Shared Data

  • If any unnecessary shared data remains on either device, you can delete it manually after verifying that each person has what they need.

Now You Have Separate Apple IDs Without Losing Data!

By following these steps, both of you will have your own Apple ID, personal iCloud storage, and access to past purchases via Family Sharing. Let me know if you need help with any specific part! 🚀
