Don't search internet when using Spotlight search

When looking for a file, I use command+spacebar to bring up Spotlight search, then enter the terms. It used to come up with files first (which is what I want), but with Mac OS 15.3 it now comes up with web searches first, which is annoying.

If I want to search the web, I'll use a browser and specifically search the web. When I'm using Mac OS, I want to search my local disk. Is there a setting somewhere to tell Spotlight to search only the local disk or only local files, and not search the web? Or at the very least, to put files first and web stuff last?

I've tried going into System settings -> Spotlight and deselecting "websites" but that doesn't help, there are still Safari searches first.

Try Command-Option-Space instead. It initiates a Finder search. With it you can be very specific as to where and what files to search for. You can easily combine names, dates, kind of file, etc and even save your custom search criteria as Smart Folders.

I've tried that, it doesn't fix the issue.

Yes, sometimes people have problems re-indexing Spotlight. That's why I suggested that there are other methods which may work.

Copy and paste this string of commands into Terminal. It will completely erase the Spotlight index folder, then restart indexing.

sudo mdutil -X /; mdutil -i on; mdutil -E /;

sudo will ask for your admin password. When you type it into the Terminal window, it won't show any response. Just type the password and hit the return key.

I just saw another post here where the person used https://matthewpalmer.net/fastfolderfinder/ and after it indexed, Spotlight worked.

I can no longer find the post, but that was the gist of it.

I’m doubting it would work for you because of the obscure errors you are getting.

You could try removing the .Spotlight-v100 folder in Finder. You should find it in /System/Volumes/Data. Show hidden items with cmd-shift-. ← yes, the period is part of the shortcut.

Hi Luis,

I have a couple of different logins on my MacBook, all but one work as expected. Below is an image of a search on "pages", it should return the Pages application but doesn't. I've been using it for years to open files and launch applications, but all of a sudden it's playing up. :-(

Maybe there's an index that Spotlight keeps somewhere? Just guessing…

I’m guessing you presented us with the Problem problem. You assumed the web search results were the cause of you not finding applications, so you asked how to disable them. You presented a problematic problem in that you didn’t just ask about the actual problem of Spotlight not finding applications.

Do as suggested and re-index Spotlight. If that doesn’t work, there are a couple other methods that might help.

Thanks Luis. Your method is a good (probably the only reasonable) alternative, but it's more keystrokes.

The files I open this way I generally use very often (the kind of file a lot of people save on their desktop). Being able to hit command-space, type maybe 3 or 4 characters, then press return to open the file was very handy. I can't do that now. :-(

I guess I don't understand why a feature that was working well for me suddenly changes behaviour. Were people clamouring to search the web from Spotlight? There are options in Spotlight settings for types of file, but the "web" option doesn't seem to have any effect. It would be good to be able to set the search to only local disk or only local and connected disks, etc.

But I guess that's for another forum. :-)

I tried following the instructions at the link. After step 3 where a folder or disk is added, I get the message:

Privacy List Error

The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error

It doesn't matter what I try to add, disk or folder, or even how little is in the folder. Is there a way to reset the index manually?
