What would be better MacBook or iPad Pro, to make a YouTube channel, a website, and an online store?

I want to make a YouTube channel, a website, and an online store. I have had a iPad since when it first came out. I'm trying to figure out should I get the iPad Pro, or the new Macbook Air with the M4, or the Macbook Pro

Hello Rcd_8226,

I would highly recommend a MacBook Pro. It is often true that a MacBook can do anything an iPad can (a few exceptions), but the opposite isn't true. I've owned way too many iPads and have had a MacBook Air and now a Pro. This is what I see based on your objectives:

  • YouTube = video editing, recording software, and graphic design
  • Website creation and online store = coding and graphic design (depending on approach)

Someone in my family is starting a YouTube channel and uses Figma for creating thumbnails, iMovie for editing videos, and may start using recording software so that an external mic and an iPhone can be plugged in to the source computer. Basically, you want to have many ports and great software support.

If we're comparing Apples to Apples (definitely pun intended), this is the U.S. price you'll be looking at for each device in a reasonable configuration with adequate storage:

  • iPad Pro 13" M4 512GB storage 8GB memory + Magic Keyboard -> $1,848.00 (plus taxes)
  • MacBook Air M3 13" 512GB storage 16GB memory -> $1,299.00 (plus taxes)
  • MacBook Pro M4 14" 512GB storage 16GB memory-> $1,599.00 (plus taxes)
  • MacBook Pro M4 Pro 14" 512GB storage 24GB memory -> $1,999.00 (plus taxes)

Notice how the iPad pro would cost just about as much as the MacBook Pro M4 Pro if we added an Apple Pencil! I would recommend the MacBook Pro M4 out of all of the options (I have an M3 MBP from last year); it has more ports than a MacBook Air and a better display for video editing. If you can afford it, a MacBook Pro M4 Pro would be an absolute beast at video editing which is very resource intensive, but that power may not be needed depending on how long your videos are and at what quality they are exported.

Anyways, I'll leave you with this resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrimsBUrvaA

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Have a nice day!

P.S. It is true that some people may purchase an iPad to act as their iPad and computer. In this case, the pricing disparity I mentioned may be irrelevant since in other cases people own both an iPad and a MacBook, adding up to a greater price than just a single powerful device (iPad Pro M4). The decision is yours. Just remember your priorities.

Good question! The M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max can be combined into two categories:

  • M4 consumer-grade chip series
  • M4 Max professional-grade chip series (the M4 Pro is a binned/reduced version of the M4 Max)

This is why the M4 Pro is such a powerful chip because it basically has the same performance as last year's M3 Max! Anyways, here are some comparison videos:

The M3 chip is still very powerful and worth considering given the value for the money; however, I would recommend waiting until the new MacBook Air M4 is released and either buying that model, or a discounted M3 MacBook Air. That is, if you choose the MacBook Air.

Here are some Nanoreview specs:

Any one of these chips will be sufficient. The main thing to remember is that more power usually equals less time working on a project; so if time is money, then theoretically a more powerful chip would pay off after many years. However, if this is more of a hobby, or you don't depend on saving just slightly more time, then it would probably be better to save yourself some money and go for the MacBook Air.

I hope this helps.

Okay. Here are some articles concerning the best animation software. I'm not a 3D animator, but hopefully these articles will help:

I found Total War Warhammer (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/total-war-warhammer/id1127837401?mt=12) and Total War Warhammer II (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/total-war-warhammer-ii/id1444865126?mt=12) on the App Store, but not version III.

Yes. Your Magic Keyboard and Apple Mouse will work with a MacBook Pro, or any other Mac. Check here for how to connect an external camera: Choose an external camera on Mac - Apple Support.

Here are several ways you can use an iPad alongside a Mac:

Yes, you can certainly use iPadOS, it's just not as feature-rich as macOS or Windows. Depending on your use case, it may work for you.

Yes, a MacBook Air will be powerful enough. The main reason I suggested a MacBook Pro was the variety of ports available to you, but you can always connect an adapter to a MacBook Air. The MacBook Air M4 has not yet been released, but it could come out as early as March 2025.

Let me know if you have any more questions. :)

No worries about the YouTube videos. It's a lot of specs which even I don't completely understand. Basically, in practice, the M4 Pro MacBook Pro will have higher gaming performance and will complete tasks more quickly. The M4 chip is still very capable.

Okay. I would suggest the MacBook Pro M4 base model with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. You can actually purchase this model for $1,400 on Amazon right now in the U.S. Here is a direct link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DLHBYRPS/ref=fs_a_mbt2_us1?th=1. Or you can purchase it through Apple Certified Refurbished ($1,360): Refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro Apple M4 Chip with 10‑Core CPU and 10‑Core GPU - Space Black. This MacBook Pro:

  • Built specifically for AI tasks (such as Apple Intelligence)
  • Lots of useful ports for all of the accessories you would use for creating YouTube videos
  • Hardware accelerated ray tracing for games
  • Good website performance
  • A fan for cooling the hardware components when playing games or editing videos

The M4 Pro is overkill for your workflow right now. If you want to spend less, I would suggest the M3 MacBook Air 13" with 512GB of storage; otherwise, the MacBook Pro M4 is the way to go. Let me know what you think!

I also want to do AI animation like this https://youtu.be/Ek2X8Mib-nc?feature=shared

I also would like to play Total War Warhammer 1-3. Last year I got a new magic keyboard for my Mac Mini, I have an Apple mouse. Can they work on the MacBook Pro? I also got a webcam for my monitor. Can the webcam work with a Macbook since the Mac already has one built in? I have an iPad 9. How can an iPad or iPad Pro work with a Mac? I have been researching Apple products. They said even though an iPad iOS is not the same as a MacOS you can still work on it for your business. Will the Mac Air with the M4 be powerful enough to do the work I want to do?

So which should I look into for the three M chip out of what I want to do out of video editing, website, online store, a little AI art, and gaming. I'm not looking at AAA games. I got an Xbox one x, a switch and a lot of other Nintendo systems for that. Here is the AI art website for the artwork https://klingai.com/

Oh, I know the MacBook Air is getting the M4 next month very soon. But can the Air do the same stuff as I want to do? Also, I was watching somebody talk about Apple products. He said for his YouTube channel and his own business he mainly uses his iPad Pro. For like editing, etc. this is the YouTuber https://youtu.be/TsWHmogtWZI?si=V27v3YZahXq_-s2n I want to get both. Ipad Pro and Mac. I have an old Mac mini. I started my first few videos editing on my iPad 9 but I need to work on it on a Mac too. I can't decide which one I should get first. 🤔

Yeah. The MacBook Air can do everything you want to do. It handles all of the software you will need very well. My main premise for recommending a MacBook Pro was the port selection.

If you want both an iPad Pro and a MacBook Air, I would recommend purchasing the MacBook Air first and the iPad Pro second.

Anyways, that’s my two cents. The MacBook Air is a great device and would satisfy all of your use cases. iPads are capable, you just have to know your workflow.

There are many good options. Whatever you choose will serve you well.

Macs can use Steam – but a lot of the games on Steam are either for Windows or for older Macs, not for current Macs. You need to carefully check the compatibility requirements for each game you are thinking of playing.

Here is the description for Total War: WARHAMMER III on Steam.

Oh, I have an old Mac mini last year I got a camera for the monitor. I want to film my screen like some YouTubers do to show a website, etc. How can you do that on a Macbook? This is the camera I got https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088TSR6YJ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
