Hi and thank you for responding. In the past couple of months, I've been experiencing an issue with Safari using Google as my search engine.

I relentlessly keep getting the "reCAPTCHA" puzzle.

Not to mention, they aren't satisfied when I'm solving the puzzle; they keep adding several connected puzzles to work my way through. I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue with help from information on the web.

I even called an Apple rep, via AppleCare, and they weren't very helpful and told me I need to contact my internet service provider.

When I called them, Spectrum, they pointed the finger right back at my device or Apple for help.

I have a fairly new M4 MacBook Pro. Several pieces of info I come across suggest that it could be a problem with extensions and caches and to clear them both out.

This, reCAPTCHA issue is driving me crazy at this point.

When using Firefox as a browser they don't recognize any problem with my browsing activity. Your assistance is appreciated.

clear Safari browser cache

Allow or block pop-ups in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Clear the history, cache, and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

change the preferred search engine

Change Search settings in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

remove extensions / see Uninstall extensions

Use Safari extensions on your Mac - Apple Support

Quit Safari.app and relaunch it holding the Shift key down and compare your results.

If no resolve I would use what works ie your Firefox.

Most caches are cleared when you Restart your Mac.

--------

Google Chrome is not well suited to run on a Mac. it is very resource-intensive and has not been optimized for use on a Mac.

One outspoken senior contributor here goes so far as to say, "if you want to run Google Chrome, you should buy a ChromeBook to run it on. Chrome is not suitable for use on a Mac."

I use Safari as my browser, and was able to turn down the unbearable DIN of ads and intrusion by just choosing DuckDuckGo instead of Google search as my preferred search engine (inside Safari on the Search pane in preferences/settings.)

Ah, relief!

If you're getting repeated captchas on the same websites then the most likely reason is that the sites aren't saving cookies to record that you've passed the captcha. This can be caused by:

  • quitting and re-starting Safari;
  • logging out of websites;
  • having Safari clear cookies when you quit or at regular intervals;
  • not giving cookie consent to the right cookies when you first visit websites - e.g. functional cookies;
  • running script blockers, ad blockers and privacy extensions;
  • having Safari's privacy settings too high (e.g. blocking all cookies).

I don't think that clearing cache will help.
