No ring tone when calls are made

I don't know if this is a result of the latest IOS update or what . . . I used to 'hear' the called phone ringing in my phone speaker. The last several weeks, however, there is NO ringing but rather dead silence until the phone has been answered. Not in airplane mode, hooked up to wi-fi, phone is charged, speaker can be on full volume. What's next?

thanks - franklin_2

The ringing sound you hear when calling someone is called a ring back tone, and your carrier manages that so you need to contact them. But keep in mind that many carriers have already discontinued it, including the major US carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Verizon hasn't.

Ringback tones were something completely different. Verizon used to sell an add-on service that would let (force) your callers to hear music rather than a ringing tone. You could even set it up so that different people would hear different songs. The songs also, obviously, cost money.

I misread your post the first time, or I would have realized you were talking about something other than what the OP was asking about. My apologies.

You are correct that the ringing sound is created by the carriers. But hasn't gone anywhere.

Thank you for clarifying Idris, and my apologies too.

You weren't around the forums back when I worked for Verizon. I still know a few things. ;-)
So the ring back tone has not been removed right across the major US carriers?

The article you referenced was for a specific Verizon product that was discontinued. Ringing tones (yes, also sometimes called ringback tones just to confuse things) haven't gone away. It seems unlikely that they will anytime soon. It would confuse people. They wouldn't know if the call was connecting or not.

Back when cell phones were less common (say the late 90s), a lot of people were confused by the lack of a dial tone on cell phones. If you have never heard a dial tone, I will know you are much younger than I!

Oh I understand now, thank you for the clarification! :)
