MacBook Pro 2021 16" M1 chip: how do I disable auto turn-on?

When I got my machine in 2021, I was rather horrified to discover (after owning numerous other top-end MacBooks) that one could no longer TURN THE BLOODY THING OFF.

Like, OFF off.

So that I could clean the screen or the keyboard without the SLIGHTEST BRUSH of a cloth or (heavens forbid!) a finger lighting the whole thing up again. This is a Very Bad Idea that somehow has been incorporated into a whole generation of MacBooks.

The best way to clean the screen is when it's off, dark, black. And how is it practical to clean the keyboard when, just to brush crumbs out or remove finger oil, you're setting off a wild and random string of text entries, inadvertent keyboard commands, etc? REALLY?

I went to Apple Support, talked on the phone, etc, only to be told that there was no way to disable this glitch. Not even a "visit the Terminal, and as a neophyte to coding, enter a complex series of characters, then it'll behave" work-around.

The good old days when every boneheaded thing that happened by chance or less-than-perfect prediction, and Apple would say, "Oops, our bad, until we get a fix out, here's what you can do" have apparently been replaced with a hubris that just turns its back on horrific user interface issues and points to "Yes, but LOOK, the machine's SO Fast. And, SHINEY!

Which indeed it is. But how do you turn it off? So that a passing butterfly can't start it up? I've seen that along the road, others have mentioned this-but those threads are DEAD. Whither now?

As mentioned, there is no way to prevent the MacBook from waking with a keypress or click of the trackpad.

Google "keyboardcleantool". First link in the results will lead you to a very small app that will disable the keyboard from registering any keypresses and allow you to clean the keyboard without wreaking havoc on your MacBook. I've used this little app for many, many years now and it's a godsend/work-around for Apple's nifty "feature".

I use the KeyboardCleanTool app to clean the keyboard at the Apple Desktop.

I use the login screen to clean the trackpad (very little harm comes from clicking it at the login screen).

You were told correctly by the folks at Apple Support and on the phone that there is no way - as of yet (?) - to completely disable this feature (not a glitch) of turning on the laptop with a touch of the keyboard.

If you'd like to be proactive, then you can leave product feedback or submit a request for features consideration in macOS using this link: Product Feedback - Apple

Meanwhile, I guess we're all in the same boat.

There is no option to keep the MacBook from booting with the press of a key.

You can keep it from booting when you lift the lid or connect it to power.

Please see: Prevent a Mac laptop from turning on when opening the lid - Apple Support

You can shut the computer off by selecting from the Finder menu > Shut Down...

Choose that, let the computer shut down and then close the lid. The MacBook is officially shut down.

If you need to clean the keyboard, simply log out of the user account to the login screen and do what you need to do. There's little that can happen to the Mac from the login screen.

GLITCH?! Did I say GLITCH?! Of COURSE, I meant "feature!"

I want to thank both of the responders (thus far) for your considered replies. They have been helpful, not just in their specifics, but now I also know that others have noticed this, and pursued answers.

I will try the "keyboardcleantool" referenced by SergZak. I'll report here after, unless my machine has become infested with demons. Other than myself.

To D.I. Johnson: I honestly did not know, after using Macs for thirty years or so, that there was a designated place one could access simply to give feedback on Apple products! I've GIVEN considerable feedback at times, but often to Support personnel who, after a while, would begin to get this glazed look in their eyes (even over the phone!!) as I urged them to please send my comments upstream somehow to someone whose job it was to give a scatological expletive. I now feel as though I've stumbled upon the "Users' Xanadu." Well, possibly...

Seriously, thanks again. I'll update at a later date.

Hey, you're welcome, my friend.

And I've seen that glazed look, too - usually on the faces of family when I engage IT mode. 🤣

Long time user here, too. Honestly, when I got my '23 MacBook Air and discovered this ❝feature❞, I thought it must be broken! Shocked to learn that this was now the way. I was 'this close' to returning it as defective! 😡😭🤣

Happy computering, my friend.
