Chrome extension pop-up error message

This is a thread that has run before but I can't see any actual solutions that have been posted.

Specifically the popup that appears (sometimes 100s of times if the Mac has been idle) is:

There is no application set to open the URL chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/translateSandbox/translateSandbox.html.

There is a screenshot in the thread here:

I am running Sequioa 15.3.1 on a 2020 iMac. I have reinstalled the OS but this didn't fix the problem.

There was a theory that this was caused by Zotero - which I have used in the past, but I can't see any trace of it in my current setup. I'm not even sure I had it installed on this machine.

I have run Etrecheck but the only issue is I'm running low on hard disc space. Could this be causing something?

I can't see anything obvious in the Launch Daemons or Launch Agents sections of the report but am happy to paste it if anyone thinks they can help.

Any ideas? Did anyone find a solution?

It is not Chrome or Zotero. The problem started when I did not have Chrome. Or Google Earth for that matter - which has laos been suggested in other threads. Installing Chrome didn't help either. Double checked and Zotero was only ever installed on my macbook (which has never had the problem). I ran a deep scan using ClamXAV yesterday and it doesnt pick up anything sinister.

Other ideas please!

As the user ( you ) has pre-determined Google Chrome is Not the root cause of this computer issue.

What more can be suggested to persuade you otherwise ?

No doubt, the user is aware that there are no windows like Viruses that effect macOS

The usage of ClamXAV to scan for Viruses just reinforces the possible idea that one is less knowledgeable about how macOS function than they think they are.

Further, should you decide to use and post the Etrecheck Report now or at a later time, we are willing to have a very close look and offer some insights

Will leave the below ditty for you to think upon.

Windows-like viruses that self-replicate and affect macOS don’t exist because of the underlying UNIX Foundation and permission limitations.

The macOS operating system resides in a sealed and read-only volume that can’t be opened by users or third-party applications.

This antivirus software only protects the developers’ bank accounts and creates problems for users in return.

Mac app security enhancements are sufficient to protect computers from malware.

Adware and malware can affect computers and are often downloaded from “shady” websites or developers who inject them into downloads.
