IPad Screen Repair Without Apple Care

I went through the Apple site to set up a screen repair for my iPad Air 11" and the closest store was 30 minutes away. I set up an appointment stating I needed my iPad's screen repaired, got there, and waited 20 minutes for my appt just to be told that without Apple care it would cost me over $400 because Apple does not replace iPad screens anymore. I asked if Apple Care would cover something that already happened and they also said no. So either way, it would be over $400 for me to have it repaired. I miss when Apple would actually be helpful and not just gorge you for $. Has anyone else experienced this and has a reputable 3rd party who will do the screen repair?
