i had to request to change my ID password and now i have to wait a week before i can?

years before i had my iphone, i had an ipod that i had set up with my main email linked to the apple ID. i went a couple years without an apple device before i got my phone and i tried to log into my original ID but didn’t remember the password and it said i needed my ipod to change it. i didn’t know where my ipod was at the time and the page told me there wasn’t enough information about me to reset the password from another device. so i just made a new apple ID with a secondary email that i have. recently i decided i wanted to link my main email to my phones apple ID but i still needed the original account to do that so i found my ipod and found the “forgot password” button and the next page said “we will contact you in 24 hours to let you know if your request was approved to change your password”, which is already annoying. well 24 hours later, i got an email saying that my request was accepted and i could change my password in a week. so im still locked out of that ID for another week and literally all i want to do is delete that account so i can link my email to my phones account. why do i have to request and wait to change MY password? especially because i got verification from both my email and my phone number.

iPhone 13, iOS 18

You still need the account password on your iPod to be able to use it on your phone. The only way to reset the password immediately is when you have another device logged into that same account, or if there is a Trusted Phone number on that account that can be used for positive verification. Without those 2 methods of resetting your password, you need to use Account Recovery, which does require a waiting period.

How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support

Only in some cases would you be able to use the email address associated with the Apple ID by responding to a verification. The details are not provided in which cases that could be, but you also would not want someone to be able to change your Password simply because they have access to your email.

In some cases, you might be able to shorten the account recovery process or reset your password immediately by verifying a six-digit code sent to your primary email address. You might also be able to shorten the wait time by providing credit-card details to confirm your identity. If you’re given this option, an authorization request goes to the card issuer.
