Blue status bar and spinning gear icon

Started happening randomly since december, seems like not many people experience the same. I get it quite often, but since there’s still not much information about wt this is I’m asking for help.

Q: What is this and why doesn’t or hasn’t apple ever disclosed any info about this untill now?

is it safe to continue using my phone? I removed the sim this time and it’s still going on…

I have seen many reports of that status icon recently, and it seems Apple has not added it to their Status icons and Documentation page yet. But it seems that this status icon shows up when a download is happening in Safari, then when switching out of it, it will display to let you know a background task is happening. That is just a speculative report until we get clarification from Apple.

I would highly suggest you submit feedback to Apple below, along with everyone else that has seen this status icon, so they can release documentation: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Blue Status Bar and Spinning Gear Icon:

Where do you see this? Is it on a homepage? Is it on the Lock Screen? A screenshot would most certainly help: Take a screenshot on iPhone - Apple Support

Report this to Apple...

If this has been going on for a while, then you need to ge the word out. Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported this to Apple?

So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary
