Why do phone numbers in my contact list come up in red or green when I try to text them?

Some numbers come up red, some green. When they do come up in those colors, I cannot text. Why?

Cannot add number to Contacts When I'm messaging a new number and I want to add to my contacts (and the issue seems to be hit or miss), and it does not appear to be related to if they are iphone or android users, but I will click on the number, click info, and the next screen that appears, that usually you can scroll down to "add contact ", gets stuck sometimes with the last text on the screen being the "$ pay" nothing appears below it. This does not happen in any consistent manner, some numbers I can add, sometimes I cannot.
