Purchased Airline tickets through Southwest with Apple Pay, and the charge aged off.

Hi everyone! I just purchased flights through Southwest with my Apple Pay, received email confirmation, the charge was on my Apple Card, then it just disappeared. I reached out to Apple and they told me the charge aged off. I checked my Southwest app, and my tickets are still there. Will Southwest push the charge through again later?? Has anyone else had this issue?? I purchased the tickets on 2/19/25. The charge was still in my balance on Friday 2/28/25. I just checked again today, and it’s gone.

Hi, airlines and rental car companies operate differently. When you make a reservation the airline does what is effectively a test transaction to make sure you have sufficient credit. The charge shows as pending for about 5 days and will fall of your account. The transaction is known as a card on file transaction. This allows the airline to retain your credit card information. This is normal for all airlines.

The airline submits the charge about 72 to 24 hours before scheduled departure. If the transaction is declined reservation is lost.

If you prefer to pay now, use a travel service like Expedia and do not book directly with airline.

While not “normal” behavior, it’s not unheard-of either.

I regularly purchase from one particular merchant who is apparently slow to reconcile his “daily” CCard receipts.

His authorizations almost always “age out” and “drop off” from Wallet’s AppleCard Transaction View

… only to reappear as a completed and processed transaction — with the original purchase date still intact — a week or so later.

Very interesting! I’m usually an American Airlines girl, and I use my AA card. I’ve never paid attention to holds or when everything processed I guess. Southwest was about half the cost on these flights, and they took Apple Pay so I jumped on the 2% savings 😂. The only reason I noticed this one was because I went to pay my card balance and it was about a grand less than it should’ve been and I was like wait , what?!? So I searched transactions and Southwest was mia. My reservations are still good and flights still in my app, so I guess I’ll just wait it out. Flight isn’t until March 23rd.
