Changed to a new battery and even went through the process (ridiculous, imo) of getting five beep sequences by pressing the new battery down five times. There was no “different” sort of beep. No connection, not recognized. Yes, purchased from Apple, about a year ago.

Okay, I’ll leave this post up for others who may have, like me, tried to connect the AirTag as a new “device” rather than looking for it as an “item.” And there it is connected.
Yes, it would have helped if Apple would have made that clear when replacing the AirTag's battery. You are not alone with going thru the motion to reset the tag only to find out later that that wasn't necessary. Trust me, I'm guilty of this myself.
Anyways, thanks for providing your solution. It will, most certainly, help others.
