Jumpy magic mouse is everywhere!

My magic mouse jumps and drags all over the screen. I have made sure it is charged but it skips from one line to another, never in the same direction twice. The pointer will pop up in strange places or not at all. I have not tried a generic mouse, not sure that would help.

I have read all the fixes, restarted the mac, looked for bugs, changed mousepads, cleaned the bottom gently. Nothing has helped.

Has anyone found a solution?

It sounds like you've already gone through many of the common troubleshooting steps; however, here are a few additional things you can try:

  • Since the Magic Mouse connects via Bluetooth, interference from other devices could be causing erratic behavior. Try:
    • Turning off nearby Bluetooth devices (including other Macs, iPhones, iPads, or wireless peripherals) one by one to see if the issue persists.
    • Moving away from crowded wireless environments or Wi-Fi routers to see if interference is affecting the connection.
  • Delete and re-pair the mouse
    • Go to System Settings > Bluetooth, find your Magic Mouse, and click on the info icon. Then click on Forget This Device.
    • Restart your Mac and reconnect the mouse.
  • You mentioned changing mousepads, but try using the mouse directly on a desk or a completely different material (glass, wood, fabric) to rule out tracking surface issues.
  • Check for software conflicts
    • Boot into Safe Mode and see if the mouse works properly.
    • If it does, then a background app or service might be interfering. If that is the case check your login items and disable any unnecessary ones. Go to: System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions
  • Create a temporary user account (System Settings > Users & Groups) and log in with it. If the mouse works fine there, the issue may be with your main user profile.
  • A USB or generic Bluetooth mouse can help determine if it's a hardware or software issue. If the issue persists with a different mouse, your Mac’s input system may be affected. This is where using an alternate mouse can help troubleshoot issues with your Magic Mouse.

Thank you very much for your response. So far this morning I rebooted in Safe Mode (took some research again 😂), deleted the mouse, restarted without the mouse, added the mouse back in and have been using without the mouse pad on the butcher block top. I have a lot of work to do this morning so lets see how it goes. So far so good! m

Is that a brand new mouse? I'm new to Magic Mouse, and only after more than two years of this just rotting in my desk have I figured out the cause of this "brand new" mouse not scrolling properly. It was the advanced setting that was enabled: pointer acceleration. Try to disable that and see if that solves it. Was your mouse working fine before? Maybe there was a change in setting, or maybe it's another issue.

settings > mouse > advance > Pointer acceleration: turn this off.

Hey there, Check out my response above 🤗. It truly boiled down to loosing the mouse pad! Now granted I haven't tried going back to work on my portable desk. It has a built in mouse pad. But here at my home office desk which is plain butcher block, it works just fine so far after all those other steps and no mouse pad. Who knew?!🤔🥳
