Error message: iCloud not set up for this Apple ID

Hope this helps other frustrated older generation AppleTv users...


Issue started when attempting to sign in on older AppleTv in my basement, no matter what ID we attempted we got the same response... "iCloud not set up for this Apple ID"


Well, after banging our heads against the wall for an hour. We discovered through several pages of this discussion topic, Apple has discontinued iCloud support for our older AppleTv device.


So to save someone the same frustrations were updating the discussion with our conclusion.


Here's what works for our device:

  • iCloud: no longer supported, you will get log in message "iCloud not set up for this Apple ID".
  • iTunes: works for watching AppleTv app.
  • Screen Mirroring: working.


Seems like the only feature not usable anymore is iCloud services... the rest of the functions seem to work as always.

To add,

  • a version of the Apple TV app was designed for the 3rd gen device (added with software version 7.3) but the 2nd gen had already stopped receiving updates and as such never received that support.
  • The 2nd and 3rd gen supported the original airplay protocol, but are not capable of airplay 2 (which may impact what content can be streamed).
  • iCloud Photos was never supported on that model, but Photo stream was and it has since been discontinued as well.
  • Most providers of 3rd party content for 2nd and 3rd gen have also discontinued their support
