Apple TV Upgrade to newer Model?

How do I upgrade my old Apple TV to the newest GEN three 4K model and still retain all my existing settings? In addition, I'll also be selling or passing on my old one, so I'll need to reset that to factory settings as well. Any instruction or advice you can provide, would be most appreciated!

click here ➜ Set up your Apple TV - Apple Support

Once you complete the setup, go into Settings ➜ Users & Accounts ➜ Default User ➜ One Home Screen and turn it on. Make sure it's also turned on, on the old Apple TV, and it should then transfer and sync everything.

Once everything is set up on the new one as you want it, then you can reset the old one to factory settings.

Thanks so much! I have the new one up and working very quickly using the One Home setting and all of my settings appear to be exactly as they're supposed to be. As an FYI, the upgrade to the new remote by itself (not to mention the faster chip and extra storage) was well worth the price of admission! I do have one other question if I may. I saw what you wrote and the link regarding resetting the old device. Can I assume that I need to unplug the new Apple TV and then replug the old one in to the TV w/HDMI to reset it and then just we connect the new one? I only have one TV which is why I ask her like that. Or can the reset be done independently of the TV? I just wanna be sure I don't lose all the apps and settings I just switched over. Thanks again!

Yes, Plug in the old Apple TV so you can see the screen on your Tv, while keeping the new one disconnected form both power and HDMI.

Do the reset and when done, just unplug it, and plug in the new one in its place.

If the old one was a 2nd or 3rd gen then it ran on a completely different platform and used server based channels. So it will not be feasible to transfer. However, if it is an Apple TV HD (4th gen) or any of the previous Apple TV 4K models then you can setup One Home Screen, this will allow the new device to populate with the same apps and appearance once you have signed in with your ID.

  1. On the Apple TV Home Screen, go to Settings .
  2. Go to Users and Accounts > [default user name] and select One Home Screen to turn it on.

As part of the setup process you can use your iPhone to automatically assign your Apple account and transfer Wifi settings.

Glad it worked for you, yes I agree the current model offers some great upgrades. The Apple TV was the last model to offer a USC port for restoral via computer so you would need to reconnect the old Apple TV and go into settings to run the restore to factory (if you have a free HDMI port then you don't even have to disconnect the new one). The apps have already been linked to your ID and downloaded to the new device so you don't need to worry.
