How do I wipe and recycle old iPhones without affecting original owners' iCloud data?

Hi Everyone,

I have some (very) old business iPhones that were given to me to reformat and recycle. I do not have the Apple password for some of them to log out of the original user's account and either way cannot get them to connect to the internet (as the iOs version is so old). I am wondering if I wipe these phones (ie restore them to factory settings) will this just wipe all the data on the old phone (photos, text messages, records of calls received and voice mail messages) and automatically disconnect/log that phone out of iCloud but without actually affecting any of the data that the original owners may have currently stored in the cloud? As it isn't connected to the internet of a network I can't do any backups and I'm assuming if it isn't connected to wifi or a network then it is basically just a paperweight with storage on a hard drive. Then if I send it for recycling no-one will be able to access any data that was originally on the phone and it will be basically a paperweight? Sorry, I am not very tech savvy. Thank you for helping.

Without the Passcode or users Account credentials, you won't be able to wipe the phones at all. If you could, no it would not remove what someone stores in iCloud. Since you won't actually be able to wipe the phone without the credentials required to get in the phones to even do so, you can safely recycle them at your closest Apple Store and you won't need to be concerned about the data on the phones anyway.

The phones where the data was deleted aren’t connected to cellular networks or wifi. The iOS system is too old to connect to my home wifi and there are no sims in them. I just wanted to get that stuff off the physical phone before I destroyed them. Otherwise I would have just reformatted them using the reset option.

Resetting the phones according to proper procedure would have disconnected them from iCloud early on in the process, so that erasure of local data on the phone did not affect synchronized copies of the data.

Disconnecting the phones properly from iCloud synchronization before doing local deletions would also have spared the owners' iCloud data.

But you had to go in and do the one thing that guarantees that if any of the phones were doing synchronization with iCloud, they are now waiting to synchronize deletes with iCloud.

I hope you didn't do that on a phone still synchronized to iCloud. When you delete photos on a phone that is connected to iCloud Photos, it doesn't just delete them from that phone. It deletes from iCloud and from any other devices synchronized through iCloud.

Ok - so I called the previous owner and got his log in password for Apple and I have the 4 - 6 digit codes to log on to the phones but now I can't get it to connect to the internet as it is so long since they have had operating system updates. Any work arounds on that? I am getting so close to completing this job and now I seem to be going around in circles. I have deleted photos, contacts, text and voice mail messages from the phones, is this enough? He didn't do any banking, store card details or anything on the phone.

Thanks

I’m actually unsure why there is any data on those phones given they aren’t connected to wifi or a network.

Because iPhones store a lot of data locally – whether or not that data is also synchronized through the network.

It sounds like you've never heard of the concept of using a phone to play music or view photos in places where cellular data is switched off or unavailable, and Wi-Fi Internet service is also unavailable.

It wasn’t connected to anything. Autosync is turned off. The whole reason I couldn’t do a complete reset was that the iOS system is too old and I couldn’t log on to wifi to do an update. It isn’t connected to any cellular networks either. I can’t see it miraculously connecting to the internet without serious high tech intervention which I am certainly not and will circumvent anyone else doing by destroying the thing.

Thanks everyone. I did a stupid thing but I think it’s only limited to the local phone as it will not connected to any sources that will allow synching or transfer of data. I will make sure no one is ever able to use it again.
