MacBook Air M2 – Black Screen of Death, AASP Says Hardware Repair Costs Money (Still Under Warranty?)

Hi everyone,

I recently took my MacBook Air M2 to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) in Ulsan, South Korea due to a black screen of death issue. My device is still under warranty, so I expected the repair to be covered. However, the technician told me that if the issue is hardware-related, I would have to pay for the repair.

As far as I understand, Apple’s limited warranty covers both hardware and software issues, unless the damage is due to accidental causes. I had no other option but to leave my MacBook for diagnostics, and the technician said I would receive a notification once the process is complete.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Shouldn’t a hardware issue be covered under warranty if there’s no accidental damage? I’d appreciate any insights or advice on how to handle this.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, hardware issues are covered by the warranty as long as Accidental Damage is not involved. Cosmetic issues also are not covered.

If you purchased AppleCare+, then accidental damage repairs will be performed at a reduced cost.

You should confirm with the tech that they see the laptop as still being under warranty. It is possible the tech is not seeing the laptop as covered by warranty in the Apple GSX service portal. Sometimes it is due to Apple's records not being updated especially if the device was purchased from a third party (even if they are authorized), or maybe the tech mis-typed the serial number when checking its coverage. If Apple's records are not up to date, then you can provide your original sales receipt for proof of purchase so that the tech can update Apple's records (or you may need to do this yourself).

If you purchased the laptop from a third party, it is possible that third party is considered the original owner of that laptop even if it was never used or opened. When the third party vendor purchased that device from Apple, then the warranty clock would have been triggered. I see this all the time on this forum. Only Apple authorized resellers can sell a device as brand new with the original warranty intact with the warranty clock starting at the time you purchase the device from them.

You can check the warranty coverage yourself by entering the system serial number on the Apple check coverage page here:
