Why is my new iPad not backing up to iCloud?

Just bought a new iPad Air M2 & transferred everything from my old iPad before removing the old one from the cloud. All seems ok except I’m unable to backup the new iPad as it says there’s not enough storage left. I might be daft but if there was enough for the contents on the old iPad, why isn’t there enough for the same contents on the new??

By design, the iCloud backup for your old iPad is independent of the backup created by your new iPad. Both backup's occupy storage space in iCloud.

Deleting your old backup, if no longer required, will make more space available within your available iCloud storage quota. You should note that unless you have subscribed to iCloud+, your free-of-charge storage is limited to just 5GB.
