Magic Keyboard only works when bluetooth is on.

I have a new Magic Keyboard with extended number pad and a Mac mini M4. It only works when bluetooth is on. How do I make it work as just a wired connection (bluetooth OFF).

Mac mini, macOS 15.3

The Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad is designed to work primarily as a Bluetooth keyboard, even when connected via a USB-C to Lightning cable. However, it should function in wired mode if connected properly.

You can try to "force" this keyboard to work via a wired-only connection, as follows:

  1. Use an Apple USB-C to Lightning cable (or a high-quality third-party cable) and plug it into a USB-C port on your Mac mini.
  2. Now let's check to see if macOS recognizes the keyboard. Go to  > System Settings > Keyboard. and see if it recognizes the keyboard as a wired device.
  3. Also, check System Settings > Bluetooth to confirm whether it is showing as "Connected via USB" or still relying on Bluetooth.
  4. While the keyboard is plugged in, toggle Bluetooth OFF under System Settings > Bluetooth.
