magic keyboard will not connect via bluetooth to my 2014 Mac Mini

My mac mini is a late 2014 on os10.13.6 whereas my magic keyboard is Model A2450 (or MK2A3LL/A(

can see magic keyboard in the bluetooth panel, but it will not connect (and turn bold in the bluetooth panel)

so I can not use is wirelessly. Yes, I can use it wire a lightning cable, as I am currently. But wireless would be better. Thanks! JW
