How do I bypass Migration Assistant during iMac factory reset?

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to set my M1 iMac back to its factory setting - Everything deleted, and a new OS intall, but I'm being shown a MIgration Assistant screen. This screen gives me the option to transfer info from a Time Machine backup or from a Windows PC, but I don't want either of these options. I wonder if anyone could advise.

Thanks is advance :)

Typically, after installing macOS, you find your yourself in the "Setup Assistant" mode, with one of the last options to use "Migration Assistant" to restore your data. That screen should have the option for either "Not now" or "Don’t transfer any information now" at the bottom. Since you don't want to do this, you would select that option and click "Continue."

If you don’t see an option to skip or you're stuck, you might have booted into Migration Assistant separately rather than through the standard macOS installation flow. If that’s the case:

  • Restart your iMac.
  • When it boots back up, it should return to the setup process. If it still takes you to Migration Assistant: Press Command (⌘) + Q to quit Migration Assistant.
  • This should return you to the macOS setup process where you can continue without transferring data.
