Hide Alerts Is Not Hiding Alerts

I have hide alerts turned on for a group message but my phone is still alerting. My phone vibrates and my watch vibrates. Nobody is mentioning me by name. I have toggled hide alerts off and on, turned my phone completely off and it doesn't matter. Hide alerts worked fine before the last update. I cannot leave the conversation because it is family. This is VERY disruptive while I am at work. I like to hide the alerts then catch up on the messages after work.
